The Paleo Diet for Celiacs

A Paleo lifestyle and diet is highly beneficial for anyone who suffers from Celiac disease and other autoimmune disorders because it eliminates all grains. According to the Mayo Clinic, Celiac disease or gluten-sensitive enteropathy is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in a few grains, the most common being: 

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Rye

People choosing to follow a Paleo diet are encouraged to eat grass-fed meat, pastured eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts and other wholefoods that support optimal health.

If you are unlucky enough to suffer from Celiac disease, eating gluten triggers an immune response in your small intestine. Over time, this reaction damages your small intestine's lining and prevents absorption of some nutrients (malabsorption). The intestinal damage often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating and anemia, and can also lead to serious complications.

In children, malabsorption can affect growth and development, in addition to the symptoms seen in adults.

There's no cure for celiac disease — but for most people, following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing. Thankfully the Paleo diet is strictly gluten free and will help alleviate many health issues.
